Everywhere you look in the Scriptures people are moving somewhere. From the call of Abraham to leave his native country to the countless travels of Paul throughout the known world of his day, people are consistently on the move.
This week I was reminded of why.
Our family was blessed this week to have a couple of days to spend at the beach together. Corrie, our two year old daughter, is finally big enough to truly enjoy the beach. Building sandcastles, riding the waves, watching the birds…she loved it all. During the chaos of life at the beach, she and I were standing in the surf one day gearing up for another trip out into the waves when she noticed what was happening to her feet.
As she stood in the surf with the waves washing across her legs, her feet began to sink in the sand. She was shocked. All she had to do was stand there long enough and her feet would submerge in the sand and she was totally unable to move. She would do this over and over and laugh as I would have to pull her out of the sand.
In that moment, I was reminded of the call of God on our lives and the danger of standing still. I’m not much of a math guy, but the equation seems clear:
Time + Lack of Movement = Stuck
That’s all it takes. A little bit of time combined with a person with no movement and before long that person is stuck, unable to step out and trust God with steps of faith on a daily basis.
It happens in individuals.
It happens to families
It even happens to churches.
Over time, the failure to trust God enough to move when He calls can easily lead to a life stuck in the sand consistently battered by the waves of life. And the real danger is that most of us don’t even know it is happening, but before we know it we look down and can’t move because we haven’t been moving.
Today, I pray that you trust a God who demands movement.
