Multiplying Disciples: Find Somebody
Whenever the topic of making disciples comes up there is one anticipated question, both from maturing Christians desiring to disciple someone and from young Christians desiring to be invested in:
"WHAT do we do?"
For them the issue is clear: they should be making disciples. But is seems daunting to think about doing what Jesus said – teaching them to do all things that God has commanded. What would we do when we get together? What if I don’t have all the answers? I don’t want to mess someone up.
While these are valid questions, there is a more primary, and often missed, question:
"WHO do I do it with?"
I know that seems simple, but this is where it all starts. One thing I am certain of is this…you can never make a disciple if you do not connect with another person. It simply can’t be done.
Often our questions and hesitation about what to do when we start connecting with someone and trying to make disciples are simply excuses to mask our disobedience. We are too scared, too busy, or too insecure to do the one thing that the Great Commission requires.
Maturing Christians: Find someone, invite them to lunch, ask a lot of questions, and shut up.
Young Christians: Watch people, find someone you admire, invite them to lunch, and talk a bunch.
This is where multiplying disciples begins. And this is the reason it often doesn’t begin.
